Scala's Bistro in Kimpton's Sir Francis Drake Hotel
Located in the Sir Francis Drake Hotel in the Union Square district of San Francisco, Scala's Bistro is one of San Francisco's hot dining spots. If you are looking for an upscale ambiance with a comfortable feel, it's perfect. The high decorated ceilings in the restaurant are gorgeous. They offer full course meals, although if you want just a light bite and cocktail, they have a bar and lounge off to the side.
I had the pleasure of dining here with my son when visiting San Francisco recently. All of the wait staff is terrific. We were warmly greeted and presented with a fantastic menu. The menu is wonderfully unique and we were told it rotates depending on the season. Starting off with fresh bread and delicious olive oil, a glass of Napa Valley Rose was a perfect accompaniment while we were deciding on our dinner choices. I love when my waiter knows how to make a great suggestion. I was looking for a local wine on the sweeter side, this rose was delicious!
Starting with the appetizers, we were already impressed. My son knew he wanted the beef carpaccio before we even sat down. He was truly in heaven after just the first bite. I chose a lighter option with the seasonal heirloom tomato salad. For a simple sounding salad, it was packed full of flavor with a surprising twist of watermelon and pickled eggplant.
We both ordered a different pasta dish for our main course and they were perfect! The house made pasta was amazingly fresh and delicious, as well as the generous amount of seafood and vegetables featured in them. Everything tasted authentically Italian, including the beautiful old world setting.
Since we had just arrived for our stay in the Sir Francis Drake Hotel, we were anxious to get settled in and didn't get a chance to try dessert. But the selections looked unbelievable and I've heard the pastry chef is fantastic. Just take a look at this menu. (I always love a cheese course, too!)
Tucked away next to the Sir Francis Drake Hotel, it's a San Francisco treasure that I can't wait to visit again. I definitely have the "Neighborhoods of San Francisco Chocolates Collection" on my list. Let me know if you've dined at Scala's Bistro and what you had for dessert!
