Hop on an offshore fishing boat for one of the best excursions to experience what the Caribbean is famous for. One of the reasons our family enjoys cruising is the variety of unique excursions offered that we can't do at home. When planning each cruise, I have each of the boys pick an excursion on their own given day. This has become somewhat of a tradition and they love perusing through the cruise line's website to pick the perfect excursion they want to experience. My youngest son has always wanted to go deep sea fishing and on our last Eastern Caribbean cruise, he was so excited that an offshore fishing trip was listed on his day when we were in St. Thomas. The excursion our cruise line offered was called "St. Thomas Off-Shore Fishing." Many of the cruise lines offer this same tour. This particular four-hour fishing trip is currently offered at $129 per person when docked in Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas. They offer morning and afternoon excursions. A half day is perfect since I typically don't like to do all day excursions. I look forward to walking around and exploring the port area as well. Plus, it's not quite as expensive. Best Caribbean ExcursionThe captain and crew will take you on a 65-foot Gulf Craft fishing boat. It holds up to 40 people and this still provides ample room to fish and move around. The "Independent Sea" has an upper deck, plus an inside area with seating and a snack bar where you can purchase prepackaged snacks and drinks, including beer. There is also a restroom. Granted, it's not what you were accustomed to back on your cruise ship but in case of an emergency, it's reassuring to have available. The fishing excursion includes fishing rods, reels, bait, tackle and assistance from their experienced crew. First, you'll have a chance to explore the gorgeous coastlines while you enjoy a 30 to 45 minute ride to the first fishing location. If the fishing isn't ideal, the captain will guide you to a spot where the fish are jumping. By taking an offshore boat, your views are incredible. This is the perfect moment to capture a panoramic photo of your cruise ship. On this type of a smaller vessel, you will be able to get closer to the shore and really see the coastlines. Fish GalleryKeep in mind, this excursion is catch and release. All of the fish were admired and then quickly thrown back into the water where they swam away. You can also check out their Facebook page for more photos of Caribbean catches. Best Tips for an Off-Shore Fishing Excursion:
Independent Sea ToursThe charter fishing excursion we booked through the cruise ship was provided by Independent Sea. You can also sign up with them if visiting St. Thomas on your own or want to do this at the last minute. The price is comparable whether you book direct or through the cruise line. However, I always recommend booking with the cruise line to ensure your ship will wait for you in case of any delays with the excursion. I must admit, I was a bit skeptical at first about taking a fishing excursion. I'm a luxury cruiser, after all! But this fishing trip was an incredible experience and we made many family lifelong memories while interacting with the sea-life in St. Thomas.
