​Every trip or vacation starts with getting from your home to the destination and then back again. That's why I always put a great deal of thought into planning how I’m traveling to the airport or cruise, as well as the best way to explore a new destination. This sets the tone for how your vacation is about to begin.

Nowadays, there are many options for ground transportation. You can catch a ride from a phone app, wave down a taxi on the street, or arrange private transportation ahead of time. It's a lot to think about. That's why I wanted to go directly to the source and ask a professional why I should use a full-service transportation company for my family’s travel. 

​Joe Rosensweet, Owner & President of Thoroughbred Sedan, Van, & Bus, a full-service transportation boutique, has the experience to know the ins and outs of private transportation services. For the past 4 years, his company has specialized in corporate/airport transfers, special event shuttle services, and other point-to-point transfers in the Baltimore/Washington, D.C. metro area and beyond.  

Baltimore, Maryland and the surrounding areas are easily accessible to fantastic vacation options. You can cruise to the Caribbean or Bermuda directly from Port of Baltimore. There are also many non-stop flights to fantastic regional or international destinations from BWI Marshall Airport. Consider riding the rail and take Amtrak from Baltimore's Penn Station. Or if you are visiting Baltimore as a vacation itinerary in itself, you'll want the best way to get around. When I'm traveling, I like for it to be luxurious, reliable, and easy.

I was anxious to hear what Thoroughbred Sedan, Van, & Bus has to say! Whether you live in this region or across the country, these are all questions to think about when deciding what kind of transportation service or company you want to use. 

​QUESTION: What are the advantages of using a private transportation service versus driving and parking at the airport?

​ANSWER: Our passengers have the advantage of being driven to the airport in a comfortable vehicle that is large enough to seat all passengers and fit all luggage. Thoroughbred drivers are all knowledgeable of local airports and will track your flight to ensure you arrive to the airport on time for your flight and will drop you off at curbside departures of the correct airline for your trip. Another benefit to using a private transportation service would be that our passengers are able to avoid airport parking lots and waiting for shuttle buses at specific times and locations. They also no longer have to remember exactly where they parked (who wants to do that on vacation) – which in turn also removes the stress of keeping track of their parking receipt. 

​QUESTION: We’ve always traveled as a family. How do you and/or most private transportation services handle the need for infant and child car seats? ​

​ANSWER: Thoroughbred always goes above and beyond to accommodate our clients. Typically for safety precautions, we suggest that our clients bring their own car seats for the ride to and from the airport or train station, or cruise terminal. Thoroughbred will store the seat for the duration of our clients trip and it will be in the vehicle for the return service. However, if there is enough notice given, Thoroughbred has provided car seats in the past for a small installation and rental fee. 

​QUESTION: If traveling with a large group, do you have any strategies or tips you recommend? ​

​ANSWER: We have a wide variety of vehicles that can seat groups ranging from 1 passenger up to 55 passengers. Our suggestion when traveling is to size up with vehicles, so that all passengers plus their luggage can fit. For example, if a group of 8 is traveling via BWI, we will use a 14 passenger van with the back row removed. If a group of 14 is traveling, we have the option of utilizing two of our large passenger vans, or a 25 passenger mini coach. We will always work with our clients to ensure their needs are met.

​QUESTION: People tend to think private transportation is a much more expensive option. How does pricing typically work?  ​

​ANSWER: Pricing really depends on which vehicle is being used, the hours in service, and mileage between locations. Our rates are comparable with other popular transportation services, but when booking with Thoroughbred, our clients have the confidence in knowing that they will arrive to their destination on time. We create a travel plan dependent upon their flight departure, train time, cruise time, etc. All drivers and dispatch physically track flight times and train departures to check for any delays or changes in gate, therefore clients will be aware. Our contracts are paid in full prior to service and we stay in contact with the lead passenger on the travel day, so the benefits truly outweigh any increase in rates. 

​QUESTION: I love exploring a new destination. Do private transportation services give city tours? ​

ANSWER: That is a service that Thoroughbred has been looking to provide! We certainly have done something similar in the past upon request – but each service is custom to what the client would like. During wedding season, we have provided walking tour guides to give personalized tours for wedding guests when there is downtime between ceremony and reception. Some cities that we’ve done this in are Annapolis, Baltimore, Bel Air, and even Gettysburg. If a client is looking for a personalized city tour, our Event Manager, Sara would be more than happy to put together an itinerary with local hot spots and fun facts about each location!

​QUESTION: Let’s hear! What is the strangest transportation request you’ve ever had? ​

​ANSWER: Life is always interesting in the transportation industry, and we’ve definitely had some interesting requests from our clients.

​One of my favorites is the time that we had a driver head into New York City to pick up a wedding dress and return it to Baltimore, without any bride being present – just the driver. Another favorite is when our owner Joe drove around DC in order to pick up three dozen empanadas for clients, without any passengers on board. Imagine how good that smelled!

When it comes to weddings, our on-site liaison becomes part wedding planner also. We have moved countless amounts of flowers between hotels and venues. Also, our Event Manager Sara also spent one night transferring wedding welcome bags from the clients’ home to a party bus while our clients were having their rehearsal dinner – that way the bags were there for their guests once dinner was done, but not before dinner began.

So, is a full-service transportation company a must for travel? From what I hear, I think so!
