When I'm not cruising or traveling to tropical beaches, I look forward to discovering new destinations in my own state of Maryland. It's a small state but it has some of the most beautiful scenery to explore. From immense mountains to gorgeous oceans, bays, and rivers, the landscape can be surreal depending on the season. All across Maryland, there are many hidden gems that are frequented by our residents. Even I want them to remain local and secret, but I can't help but to brag about them. You may not initially think of Maryland for wine, but once you've had a glass of my favorite Boordy Vineyards Riesling or Jazz Berry, you may quickly change your mind. The best part is that you can visit where they are made. Boordy Vineyards is only a 30 minute drive from downtown Baltimore, but feels like you've stepped into it's own tranquil world. Located in Baltimore County, it's pristine vineyard is surrounded by dairy and beef cow farms, beautiful horses, and rolling hills. Boordy Vineyards first began making wine in the Maryland countryside over 71 years ago and remains family owned today. Over the years, they have produced numerous award winning wines and have even expanded into different series with varying labels and price ranges. With 240 acres of property, not only do they grow grapes and produce their own wines, but they have become a family friendly destination for seasonal events and concerts. With a rustic stage and expansive picnic area, they often welcome guests to bring their own picnic and listen to live music and relax on the lawn. Stop inside the wine shop and you can even purchase a bottle to uncork and enjoy. Sometimes local ice cream, candy, and cheese makers will visit and showcase their own delicious handmade treats. As soon as you start planning your visit, check out the Boordy's event schedule on the website to see what's happening when. If you want to experience the wine making process, they seasonally offer tours of the vineyard. It's amazing to see all of the work and time that goes into each bottle of wine. Then head over to the beautifully decorated tasting area, as the knowledgeable staff will guide your tastebuds from dry to sweet wines and everything in between. Experience varieties in their distinguished Landmark Series, the popular Chesapeake Icon series with gorgeous Maryland themed labels, or the latest Sweetland Cellars series. You'll even get a souvenir engraved wine glass to take home (I'm working on acquiring a complete set!) One of the most special places to purchase Boordy wines is in their fantastic wine and gift shop. With racks and cubbies filled with amazing wines and unique gifts, they'll package up your purchases securely for the ride home. Or if you are in the middle of your vacation or heading on a cruise, visit www.boordy.com for easy on-line ordering delivered right to your doorstep. Why is Boordy Vineyards on my Maryland hidden gems list? Tucked away in Baltimore County, Maryland, it's a great escape from the busy city and stressful schedules and get back to nature, family, and a peaceful way of life. This is the first in our series. Follow along over the next few months to virtually explore Maryland for more hidden gems. From the mountains to the city of Baltimore, Maryland has many luxury destinations, amazing dining experiences and unique activities to be found. You might just discover a new favorite spot for your next family vacation. Up next, we explore Port Deposit, Maryland before heading over to Bonjour!, my favorite Maryland bakery.

With our family's busy work and school schedule, we look forward to traveling during holidays. Although it seems that our family can never agree on anything, we do when it comes to vacations. We typically travel on cruises or stay at luxury hotels while enjoying upscale dining, beautiful decor, excellent service, and spacious accommodations. However, we still need family friendly and comfortable! When we are not traveling, I enjoy dining out locally, as well as cooking and baking in my own kitchen.
